  1. How do Botox injections work?

Botox was discovered by accident over 20 years ago. It was used medically to treat facial tics around the eye area and a noticeable side effect was that wrinkles improved and is now used to treat expression lines predominantly in the forehead and around the eyes. Botox temporarily weakens the muscles that cause the skin to wrinkle creating a smooth, more youthful appearance. It lasts up to four months and the muscles regain enough strength to start working again.

  2. Are Botox treatments safe?

Botox is a very safe treatment. There are hundreds of clinical studies that show it is perfectly safe if it is used in the recommended amounts by a qualified cosmetic doctor because it is a prescription drug. In 2006 the UK government approved the cosmetic use of Botox.

  3. What is the treatment like?

The treatment is very quick and takes around ten minutes and any discomfort  is short lived. The doctor will ask you to frown and then relax the muscles to establish where to inject. The treatment consists of a small series of injections that last about 3 seconds. Discomfort is minimal and afterwards a cold pack may be applied to reduce and swelling.

  4. Are there any side effects associated with Botox?

Some people (around 10%) get a headache within 24 hours but this quickly resolves itself within 48 hours.  Sometimes bruising can occur around the injection site. Also whenever the skin is pierced or broken there is always a chance it can get inflamed so leave your face alone and don't apply make-up (mineral make up is fine) for a few hours after the treatment.

  5. What kind of results can I expect?

Botox is best used to treat the frown area, crow's feet and wrinkles at the top of the nose.  You can expect the expression lines in these areas to smooth out. For the first few days you may not notice the difference but after a few days you will find it more difficult to make deep furrows and lines but it's a myth that is freezes all facial expressions. Provided you go to an experienced cosmetic doctor you will still be able to smile and emote but you will just look calmer and more relaxed! The effects wear off after 3-4 months.

  6. What are the limitations of Botox?

Botox is ideal for lines  in the frown area, crow's feet and wrinkles at the top of the nose but it is not ideal for filling deeper  furrows like nose to mouth  lines or for lifting the cheek area, or for the lips. You will need different  fillers for these type of treatment.

  7. What other symptoms can Botox be used to treat?

Botox is also used to treat migraines or stress related headaches and also excessive hand and underarm sweating (hyperhidrosis). It can also be used on the neck to treat the vertical lines from the jaw line to collarbone and the horizontal necklace lines.  Some people suffer from a irregular or knobbly chin and it can be use to smooth this area and also bunny lines around the top of the nose that can be caused by squinting. More recently it has also been used to create a subtle lift in the neck area also known as a Nefertiti lift.

  8. Are Botox treatments safe in the long term

Yes. There are hundreds of clinical studies that confirm its safety and it has been used for over 20 years. Although the cosmetic results of the treatment last for 3-4 months, clinical studied have shown that it is eliminated from the body after 3-4 weeks.

Botox in our Cheshire clinic

Over the last ten years Botox has made a name for itself as one the best ways to combat those tell tale signs of ageing. It works by demobilising key muscles in the face which in turn reduce the formation of fine line, for example forehead lines. We believe that when getting Botox it is prudent to have the treatment performed by a qualified expert, as side-effects from this proceedure are widely publicised. All our Botox procedures are carried out by a qualified Doctor, with even the opportunity for a free top-up so we can make sure you get the results you want.
