Frequently Asked Questions on Male Chest Reduction
Is male chest reduction surgery really necessary?
No, it's a cosmetic thing. You aren't creating any health issues by leaving your chest as it is, but if you are self conscious about your chest and this affects the way you dress and interact socially, then a chest reduction (gynaecomastia) procedure can benefit you greatly.
What kind of results can I expect?
At your initial meeting with your cosmetic surgeon, you will have the opportunity to discuss what your expectations are from the male chest reduction surgery. The surgeon will then be able to advise you on whether this is possible. After all the swelling disappears however you should expect to see your chest firmer, contoured and of course flatter.
How is the chest reduction procedure done?
Usually male chest reduction is performed using
liposuction. This would be done using anaesthetic
and the excess fatty tissue is moved via a small
tube. Occasionally male chest reduction surgery
requires the removal of gland tissue also and
this will be discussed with you during your
initial meeting with one of our experienced
surgeons. Once the tissue is removed, the surgeon
will stitch the incisions in such as way as
to create a more sculpted look once they dissolve.
How long does a gynaecomastia procedure take?
Usually the procedure will take between 1 -3 hours.
What happens after the chest reduction surgery?
You will have some swelling and see bruising around your chest area, and will need to wear a support for a few weeks by which time most of the swelling will have gone down. You will probably be able to return home the same day as the gynaecomastia, but it is possible you will need to spend at least one night at the clinic.
Is it a long recovery process?
A male chest reduction procedure usually involves a 2-3 week recovering period, but within a day or two post-op you should be back up on your feet and able to move around freely. Usually men who have this procedure return to work after approximately 3 weeks, but if you should discuss this with your cosmetic surgeon before deciding to have the chest reduction.
When can I return to the gym?
A member of our team will discuss post-operative hygiene and lifestyle restrictions to you, but you should be able to return to most of your usual activities within a month of the gynaecomastia surgery.
When will I see the "final" results?
It will probably be a couple of months before you get the full visual impact of your chest reduction procedure.
