Frequently asked questions
Do I require an initial consultation?
Yes. An initial consultation is an important stage of the treatment when your cosmetic doctor may asses your particular condition and the suitability of Omnilux blue light therapy and also whether benefit can be gained from combining this with another treatment, maybe a skin peel or Omnilux revive or Omnilux plus light.
How long does the treatment take and how many sessions will I require?
The first treatment can be expected to take about 45 minutes. ‘Before’ and ‘after’ photographs will be taken at this session. All following treatments should only take about 30 minutes when the time light is used for 20 minutes and appointments should be made for twice a week at 48 hour intervals.
Most moderate acne inflammation can be cleared in as few as 8 x 20 minute sessions, but patients must be aware that due to the nature of acne conditions there will be a small percentage of patients who may not see results.
How does this treatment work?
Omnilux blue™ is a unique solution to the treatment of acne and can be an alternative or support to oral and topical acne medications.
It has been shown that patients who suffer from acne have particularly active sebaceous glands that produce excess oil and the skin’s pores become clogged and gather amounts of natural bacteria. Resulting inflammation and redness results. The main bacteria present in this condition is Propionibacterium acnes or P. Acnes which produce natural chemicals called porphyrins that are sensitive to light. These chemicals neutralise the bacteria when stimulated and so the inflammation subsides.
Is this treatment painful?
There is no pain with this treatment. It is safe, non-invasive and there is no recovery time.
Are there any possible side effects?
No side effects have been reported. Your consultant will screen you before embarking on any treatment to check if your skin might be light sensitive as every care is taken, but the light source does not contain any harmful UVA or UVB rays and extreme sensitivity is highly unlikely. In fact it should be a relaxing experience that gives a feeling of well-being both during and after treatment.
How long do the results last?
Individual results will vary taking into account skin type and lifestyle but you can expect a noticeable improvement in appearance. The overall result will also depend on whether the treatment was in isolation or as part of a combination of treatments.
Results from trials which included patients with mild to moderate acne showed that 73% reported significant improvement after 4-8 weeks following treatment and by 12 weeks this increased to 89% reported reduction in inflammation.
In order to maintain these results monthly maintenance visits are recommended.
How much can I expect to pay for treatment?
Single treatments cost £55 however a course of treatment is recommended and discounted packages will apply.
