Frequently asked questions

What is AHAs?

AHA is the acronym that stands for Alpha Hydroxy Acid. AHAs are water soluble organic acids that are have low molecular weight and can be found naturally in our food; e.g. lactic acid from milk, malic acid from apples, tartaric acid from grapes, glycolic acid from sugar cane and citric acid for citrus fruits.

Why are AHAs effective for the treatment of Aging Skin?

AHAs act in two ways to treat aging skin. Firstly AHAs will moisturize and unlike moisturizers that form a barrier on the skin to prevent excessive evaporation, AHAs moisturize by “signaling” the skin cells to increase the natural ground substance found in Hyaluronic acid or HA (do not confuse this with AHA).

HA is a natural substance found in skin that binds 1000s of times its molecular weight in water. HA is the skins natural moisture retention substance. AHAs therefore manages to moisturize the skin from the INSIDE OUT!

Secondly, AHAs exfoliate the skin naturally. Our skin constantly renews itself by the process of cell division, migration of cells to the skin surface, and ultimately dead skin cell shedding or exfoliation. As we get older the process slows down. Dead cells back up on our outer skin layer so the skin becomes dull, sallow, coarse, and accentuates fine lines, wrinkles and uneven skin tones. AHAs exfoliate the skin by their unique ability to dissolve the cellular cement that holds all the dead cells together. AHAs return skin cell exfoliation to its natural youthful rate so fine lines, wrinkles and pigmentation is improved and a more youthful appearance is restored.

Why is lactic acid the AHA of choice?

Firstly, new clinical research showed that lactic acid is superior to all other AHAs, including glycolic, in being able to signal the skin cells to increase HA deposition in the skin. Basically lactic acid does a better job than all other AHAs at moisturising the skin because it is natural to the human body. The process is similar to wound healing and triggers a natural response which gives outstanding results in skin moisturization levels. Lactic acid can also be oxidized by the skin to create pyruvic acid, an alpha-keto acid which is even more effective that AHA at skin exfoliation.

What is MFAS?

PRIORI’s unique Multi-Functional Antioxidant Sequence (MFAS) contains the essential vitamin antioxidants necessary for optimal skin health –

- Vitamin A: enhances cell metabolism and increase cell turnover rate
- Vitamin C: antioxidant that stimulates collagen synthesis
- Vitamin E: antioxidant important to cell membrane protection
- Pro-Vitamin A: antioxidant that acts as a reservoir for Vitamin A synthesis

PRIORI’s unique MFAS antioxidant combination is designed to be best at enhancing the natural cell process. The MFAS is combined in a liposome delivery system that is time released, self regenerating and stable in formulation. The human body recycles its antioxidants in order to get maximum benefits in a delicate balance of sequential regeneration.

What is LCA Complex?

LCA Complex is a unique blend of pH balanced lactic compound (lactic acid + sodium lactate) with a Multi-Functional Antioxidant Sequence (MFAS) that delivers optimal anti-aging results. LCA COMPLEX = Lactic Compound + MFAS Because AHAs are acids, proper formulation is essential to deliver the desired benefits without unnecessary irritation. Lactic Compound a buffered mixture of Lactic Acid and Sodium Lactate, pH balanced to 3.8 – 4.4 (close to the pH of normal skin) by partial neutralization of the acid. Buffered Lactic Compound creates a reservoir of lactic acid molecules, allowing a slower time released delivery to the skin, thus making higher concentrations of lactic
acid safe and non-irritating to the skin for optimal results.

Are AHAs irritating to the skin?

AHAs are not irritating to the skin if formulated properly at the correct pH levels, above pH 3.5. Many years ago in the early 90’s we established the relationship between AHA product’s pH & concentration and the effect on skin irritation and sensitivity. AHA product irritation is a function of pH and not concentration. Therefore, if AHA products are formulated at pH 3.5 or greater they produce very little skin sensitivity or irritation. By raising product pH levels through the process of partial neutralization of the AHA we can deliver higher concentrations of AHA, needed for the most dramatic anti-aging benefits, without unnecessary skin irritation. PRIORI Advanced AHA products are formulated in this manner with products pH’s ranging from 3.8-4.4 much closer to the natural pH of the skin.

Do AHAs cause sun sensitivity?

Yes. AHAs will increase skin sun sensitivity and should therefore always be used in conjunction with an SPF 15 or greater sunscreen. Other preventative methods that can be taken are choosing to wear a hat with a wide brim at least 4 inches wide, wearing lightweight sun protective clothing, and staying out of the sun when its rays are the strongest, between 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.

Does AHAs thin the skin?

It could be thought that One AHAs thin the skin because they increase skin exfoliation or dead cell sloughing, but this is only a very superficial effect, and to the contrary. The actual effect is that AHAs increase skin epidermal/dermal thickness due to the increase in Hyaluronic Acid deposition in the skin associated with AHA use (see Q. 2). An increase in HA in the skin leads to a dramatic increase in the moisture retention properties of the skin so that the skin actually plumps the skin making it thicker through increased moisturization.

Do AHAs cause skin inflammation?

Absolutely not. AHAs do not work by a mechanism of plumping the skin as a result of skin inflammation. AHAs plump the skin through moisturization (see Q. 8). AHAs if formulated at the correct pH level, 3.5 or greater, will not cause skin inflammation.

Are AHA useful to treat any skin conditions?

AHAs can be used to help many skin conditions. They can manage problem prone skin, because they dissolve dead cell build up, promote exfoliation, improve cleansing and reduce follicular plugging. AHAs are also used to help balance skin tone through exfoliation and ultimately eliminate the accumulated surface melanin. AHAs are also widely used to improve the appearance of sun damaged skin. They dislodge corneocyte or dead skin cell build up and improve the normal exfoliation process, which is slowed-up in sun damaged skin.

Can AHAs be used on all skin types?

Yes, AHAs may be used on any skin type to good effect.

Are there any side effects with AHA use?

There may be some slight stinging or irritation when AHA based products are first applied but the sensation should disappear after a few minutes and this should subside after several applications.

Are PRIORI Advanced AHA products irritating?

PRIORI Advanced AHA products contain an optimal balance of pH and acid concentration to yield maximum results with little or no irritation to the skin. On initial use of PRIORI Advanced AHA, individuals with sensitive skin may experience a mild tingling sensation, which usually disappears quickly. Where can PRIORI Advanced AHA products be purchased?

Fine lines and wrinkles will improve and complexion and texture will become more even. Allow about 2 to 6 weeks for visible results, depending on the condition of the skin before the use of PRIORI Advanced AHA products.

Laser hair removal

Welcome to Court House Clinics. Under the guidance of Dr Patrick Bowler (well known from the television programme “10 years younger”) Court House has grown to offer a huge range of cosmetic and beauty treatments. Whilst these cover everything from high surgery treatments such as a face lift through to cosmetic injections for lines and wrinkles, in recent times laser hair removal has become one of our most popular treatments. Laser hair removal is a great way to deal with the growth of unwanted hair without having to go through the day-to-day ritual of shaving. With so many people coming to us for laser hair removal, we are now in position to offer it at a very competitive price. We also have regular promotions on it as well, for both new and existing hair removal customers.

Cosmetic Surgery

Cosmetic surgery is no longer the preserve of the rich and famous but is now accessible to everyone. This is largely due to safer techniques, reduced downtime with shorter scars, and greater awareness due to media exposure. It is also partly down to the larger number of people who have had non-surgical treatments before diving straight into cosmetic surgery.

The most common treatment that is carried out is liposuction (tummy tuck), rhinoplasty (nose reshaping), otoplasty (ear correction) and blepharoplasty (eyebag or eyelid surgery). These are often carried out in conjunction with treatments such as chin or cheek implants.

The most common surgery carried on women is breast enlargement (augmentation) and then mastopexy (breast uplift) closely followed by breast reduction surgery and face-lifts. However we are also seeing a marked increase for requests for labia and vaginal plastic surgeries.

Arguably the biggest change in recent years is the increase in demand for male cosmetic surgeries, with the most popular treatments being chest reduction, pectoral implant and testicular implants.

Non-Surgical Cosmetic Treatments

The demand for non-surgical treatments has grown at an even faster rate than cosmetic surgery. The treatments that are most in demand are laser hair removal and microdermabrasion treatments. These can mimic the effects of surgery or be used in combination with surgical procedures to enhance and prolong results.

For people with problem skin scientific breakthroughs now mean we are able to offer some of the best acne treatments available in combination with most effective anti aging treatments. For example we have invested in some of the latest acne laser treatment and when combined with chemical glycolic skin peels or perlane injections this can create similar effects as a cosmetic face-lift surgery and is very effect treatment for acne scarring.

Some of the non-surgical options provide a real alternative to surgery. A prime example of this is smart Lipo. This laser assisted liposculpture provides fast fat loss where the fat is actually dissolved by the body naturally. For small areas of localised fat this treatment is sometimes better than Liposuction as it is minimally invasive and involves little downtime.

In addition to these treatments we also offer thread vein removal, sculptra, perlane and restylane injections, skin tag removal, mole removal, cyst removal and laser tattoo removal.
