Follicular unit extraction (FUE)
This advanced technique of Follicular Unit Extraction or FUE Hair Transplants is now offered by Court House Clinics in addition to Advanced Micrografting treatments for Hair Loss.
FUE is a method of hair transplantation that can be achieved without the use of a scalpel or the need for stitches. As a result no scars are left to detract from the natural appearance of this innovative form of hair restoration. Outstanding results can be achieved in cases of less advanced hair loss due to pattern balding and general thinning and the lack of scaring is particularly relevant for those men who like to keep their hair fairly short. At present only a handful of surgeons are expert in the technique of FUE, but we are pleased to introduce to you Mr Mir Malkani FCRCS who is also a member of the International Society for Hair Restoration Surgeons (ISHRS).
A particular advantage of Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) is that it can be carried out under local anaesthetic. The patient is not required to go to hospital and needs only to relax watching television or take time reading a book while the surgeon performs the procedure. Many patients in fact return to work the next day.
This method of restoration is achieved by the extraction and movement of healthy hair follicles from areas on the body where hair is abundant to areas on the scalp where thinning has occurred. These hair follicles maybe taken from the back of the head or even chest and back hair can be deployed. This method has the advantage over Micrografting Strip Surgery which inevitably left scarring at the donor site as well as needing healing time at the point of transplantation.
It is quite possible to use FUE to improve the overall effect of traditional strip surgery. In cases where there has been advanced hair loss, FUE, on its own, may not be able to fully restore coverage but with many patients the creation of a natural hair line by FUE will ideally complement full Micrografting Surgery.
FUE is an exciting and innovative procedure but it is dependent on several factors. Firstly it is necessary for there to be a healthy donor area in proportion to the amount of coverage required and it may not always meet the requirements of curly hair replacement as in the case of Afro-Caribbean hair.
