Pectoral implants
There are an increasing number of men who wish to have better definition in their chest muscles. Surgical procedures have developed so much that is now possible for those who want ‘pecs’, to have implants to enhance them which gives existing muscles a toned, more enhanced look. This can be especially useful for body builders, whose appearance is essential to their profession and for those who were born with very little muscle and for whom no amount of exercise can produce a male looking chest or to simply improve definition in the chest area for patients with congenital defects or loss of muscle in an accident or injury.
The pectoral implant procedure can often reproduce a natural, even and symmetrical chest area and can help build self-confidence in individuals who were once embarrassed by their appearance. In the hands of a skilled surgeon, the result is a naturally athletic appearance with a well-proportioned torso.
Frequently asked questions
Considering surgery?
A pectoral implant operation involves placing silicone implants beneath the pectoral muscle tissue in order to improve the contours of the chest. The implants are made from solid silicone (unlike female implants the fact that are solid means they have no risk of rupture) but they are slightly pliable and are usually a flatter teardrop shape although they can often be ‘tailor’ made to be a specific shape. The effect of the surgery is permanent and they are designed to last a lifetime.
The cost for Male Pectoral Implants is from £7,000.
How is the procedure performed?
Pectoral implanting is performed via an incision in each armpit. A pocket is then created under the chest pectoral muscles and the implant is positioned there to fit precisely with very little movement. Once the implant is in the pocket it will be adjusted to sit comfortably and then during healing scar tissue will grow around the implant ensuring that it does not move.
The procedure will be carried out in hospital and is usually performed under General Anaesthetic but you can often go home on the same day. It takes around 2 hours to perform.
How will you feel following surgery?
When you wake from your operation the site of implant and incisions will feel painful and sore. The pain is best described as being like cramp but rapidly diminishes after several days. Your surgeon will probably prescribe painkillers to relieve any pain. There will be dressings over the wounds and the chest is generally bound with bandages which will hold the implants still. Drains may be placed to relieve any fluid build up that collects in the area.
When you return home you will be advised to rest for a few days making sure you do not lift anything except for small objects. Most patients return to work after a week and any stitches or sutures will be removed one week post operatively. You can expect pain and tenderness to last for a week and bruising and swelling to last for anything up to four weeks.
Will there be scars?
Any surgical treatment to insert implants will require incisions. While most incision lines are concealed within natural contours in the armpit. Also with males these small scars are often hidden by body hair on the upper chest area.
What are the general risks associated with surgery?
Any elected surgical procedure carries certain risks which will be fully explained to you by the surgeon and these can include: scarring, bleeding (hematoma), infection, healing problems, changes in sensation, uneven contouring or skin rippling, swelling and bruising, risks of anaesthesia, accumulation of fluids, DVT, breast asymmetry and allergies which may arise in surgery and the possibility of revision surgery, but this will all be thoroughly explained.
How much can I expect to pay for this procedure?
