Mole, cyst and skin tag removal

Mole, cysts and skin tags often appear on the face as well as on the rest of the body and they can cause embarrassment as well as problems with catching on clothing or when shaving.

Before removal a mole should be carefully examined by one of our dermatology experts and a review made of the history of the unwanted mole. There are several types of moles and can usually all be removed by a simple procedure taking about 20 minutes in clinic. Benign pigmented moles (nevi) may be removed by surgery (excision) or by laser treatment.

Although a small white scar is common after mole removal, the cosmetic result is usually considerably better than that following healthy tissue-destructive methods such as excision and suturing.

After the removal of a mole, a white scar is usually left which will not be obvious and is a preferable result to that achieved by excision or suturing.

Removal of skin tags, and other lumps and bumps can be done by excision, laser or hyfrecator treatment

Please note such treatment should cause minimal disruption to your working life that you may resume normal activities immediately following any in-clinic procedure.

Frequently asked questions

If I have a mole or a cyst is it dangerous?

It is important that any mole, cyst or skin tag is examined by our medical team in the first instance but not all are dangerous and usually our patients wish to remove benign skin lesions for cosmetic reasons.

What different types of minor surgical procedures are available?

Various treatments are available for skin lesion removal. These are cryotherapy, curettage and cautery, shave biopsy and skin biopsy.

How would I decide which type of procedure is suitable for me?

You will have an opportunity to discuss these various methods of treatment at your initial consultation when the best solution to your particular needs will be chosen taking into account where and what type of lesion is present. A decision will also be made as to whether a skin biopsy is needed.

What is a skin biopsy?

This procedure involves injecting a local anaesthetic to the area and a piece of skin is removed and sent for histology testing. Either the whole lesion is removed or just a part is taken and depending on the size of the wound it will be stitched or allowed to heal from the edges. A further clinic appointment will need to be made after 5-10 days for the removal of any stitches. There may be some pigmentation changes but this should be temporary and there will be a small risk of infection following the procedure. There will be a permanent scar at the site of the biopsy.

What is cryotherapy?

Treatment by Cryotherapy involves freezing the area with liquid nitrogen. This procedure can destroy any areas of skin that have become abnormal in character, either as a result of sun damage, solar keratoses and pre-cancer cells and minor skin cancers. There may be blistering or swelling around the area and this usually heals well but a permanent scar is left.

What is curettage and cautery?

Curettage and cautery is a treatment that involves scraping a lesion away from the skin’s surface and then the small blood vessels in the remaining wound are sealed. The area is numbed before treatment by injection and as the wound from the procedure is only superficial it is left to heal naturally and stitches are therefore not needed. Any pigmentation changes that might occur are rarely permanent and will fade and the patient should be aware that infection may develop and obvious care should be taken. A permanent scar will be left after the treatment

How is the price decided?

There is a minimum price for removal of a single lesion. Multiple lesions have an additional cost per lesion. The price includes the cost for full histology report.
There is a minimum cost for the treatment of one lesion to include a full histology report. Several lesions are calculated at an additional price per lesion.

Do the procedures hurt?

There should be no pain during treatment as a local anaesthetic is used.

How will I look after treatment?

Any swelling or redness usually disappears after 48 hours and a dressing may be applied to protect the area. There could be a little discomfort once the anaesthetic has worn off and it is recommended that the patient takes paracetamol or some similar medication.

Will a skin tag removal procedure leave a scar?

Any scar that it left after treatment will be white and the size will be in accordance with that of the blemish that has been removed. The least amount of scarring is achieved with laser treatment but you will need to take the recommendations of your dermatologist as to the best treatment for your condition and you will be given ample opportunity to discuss your options at your initial consultation.

How long does mole removal take?

Once confirmation has been received that the mole is benign then the procedure for removal is quite quick and should only take 20-30 minutes. A more accurate assessment of this time period will be given at your initial consultation.

Can I go home immediately after my cyst removal procedure?

Yes. You may leave once the anaesthetic has worn off although you should be accompanied because you will not be allowed to drive immediately following anaesthesia. There may be some slight swelling or bruising at the point of treatment which may remain for a couple of days. Care should be taken not to knock the treatment area, but you may resume normal activities immediately.

How much can I expect to pay for such minor surgical procedures?

Skin Tag and Cyst removal from £80. Mole removal from £350 - £400 depending on the procedure recommended by your medical practitioner.  A full histology report will be provided for removal of all moles.
