Thread veins can occur on the face and on the body. Highly visible broken red spider veins on the face can case a great deal of distress. Facial veins can be hereditary or occur as part of the ageing process, sun exposure or by a “flushing” skin condition known as rosacea. At Court House Clinics we use specialist lasers to successfully treat this condition. Thread veins and some types of varicose veins on the legs respond better to non-surgical microsclerotherapy injections. These veins can vary in type, size and colour and can be caused by a variety of factors including genetics, pregnancy, hormones and sun exposure. At Court House Clinics we use the Doppler Ultra Sound assessment to diagnose and recommend an individual treatment plan to ensure the best results.
What causes facial thread veins
Although facial thread veins/spider veins are relatively common they can cause a great deal of embarassment and distress to sufferers. The medical term for this type of vein is telangiectasia and they may be hereditary, or acquired as a result of sun exposure, natural ageing or as part of the skin condition called rosacea. They may also rarely be associated with the medical condition Systemic Lupus.
Rosacea
In rosacea, the skin of the face and in particular the cheeks and nose tends to flush easily and over time become permanently red. Thread veins appear in the same sites and in pustular rosacea (formerly known as acne rosacea) spots and pimples appear too. The condition is aggravated by sun exposure, emotion, climatic changes and some foods and beverages such as tea, coffee, spicy foods and alcohol. Most sufferers are keen to improve the appearance by treating any pimple spots and reducing the redness and thread veins.
How are thread veins treated?
Before any treatment is carried out a consultation with a doctor is necessary to establish the correct diagnosis and work out a personalised treatment plan which is tailored to your individual skin condition. Whilst thread veins on the legs are often best treated by injection microsclerotherapy (see below for more details), facial thread veins are best treated by laser or Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) These machines deliver carefully controlled doses of light energy to the veins which is absorbed by the blood and converted to heat. The heat then seals off the veins so that they can no longer carry blood and over a short period of time the veins disappear.
How many treatment sessions will I need?
Thread veins will normally respond to 2 or 3 treatments but general redness may need 5 or more treatments.
How long do the results last?
Thread veins which disappear after treatment have gone permanently and the same veins will not recur. However, conditions such as rosacea are progressive so new veins may appear at some point in the future making further treatment necessary though this may be after several years.
Protecting the skin from the sun by use of a good sunscreen is an important part of helping to prevent new veins forming.
