Warts are innocuous bumps that show up on the skin’s surface. They most usually show up on the feet and hands, and are also very common on the face. They may recede in time if left untreated, though this might take a year or two.

They are caused by a particularly contagious virus, known as the human papilloma virus, that stimulates a hard protein, keratin, to grow excessively in the skin’s top layer and this gives the characteristic features of the wart. The infection can be passed on by direct skin contact and is also sometimes caught from items capable of cultivating the virus, such as a towel. Once it has been caught, the virus can stay inactive for a period of time and may turn up just months subsequent to initial contact. No treatment is guaranteed to remove them entirely, as warts can be incredibly steadfast, yet they can be controlled more effectively from a treatment called Cryotherapy which entails using liquid nitrogen to destroy the abnormal skin cells.
