Macrolane is an injectable treatment based on Q-Med's patented technology, NASHA™, for the production of stabilized non-animal hyaluronic acid. Macrolane is intended to last for 12-18 months. Each individual treatment programme will include a yearly top-up as required to maintain optimal treatment results. However, duration depends upon the area of the body treated and the volume used.

Dr Patrick Bowler, Medical Director of Court House Clinics says:

"Macrolane is an interesting development which offers clients new non-surgical treatment options. With Macrolane it is possible to make small changes to the shape of the breasts and is a new option for clients looking for subtle enhancement."

Frequently asked questions

What is Macrolane™?

Macrolane - the first body shaping treatment using hyaluronic acid. It is based on Q-Med's unique patented NASHA™ technology (Stabilized Non-Animal Hyaluronic Acid) which has been used in over 9 million treatments in over 70 countries worldwide. Use of NASHA has been clinically proven and well documented in facial aesthetics for over 10 years

What is NASHA™?

Stabilized, Non-Animal Hyaluronic acid (NASHA) is unique to Q-Med, manufacturers of Macrolane. Naturally occurring hyaluronic acid (HA) undergoes a process where less than one percent is stabilized to form a permanent three-dimensional HA network without damaging the original chemical structure. This stabilization process produces a biologically degradable NASHA gel that carries minimal risk of allergic reaction or transmission of infectious substances and enables a longer durability.

What are the benefits of Macrolane to patients?

Market research has shown there to be a significant number of women who would like to adjust the shape of their body in a natural, non-permanent way that does not involve the use of implants or body fat in a major surgical procedure. Many women are also very hesitant about undergoing general anaesthesia or being left with a scar. With Macrolane, the procedure is short and requires only local anaesthetic and minimal time away from work or after-work activities.

What are the treatment indications for Macrolane?

Macrolane is an innovative product currently indicated for volume restoration and shaping of body surfaces, for example, breast shaping, the calves and buttocks. Macrolane can also even out discrepancies in the skin surface, for example, those caused by liposuction and surgical scars.

Can Macrolane VRF be used for breast shaping?

Yes, many physicians see advantages of using Macrolane for breast shaping as opposed to more invasive techniques.

Macrolane is particularly suitable for women looking to boost their breast size by one cup size, wishing for a more defined cleavage, a more feminine shape but not wanting the surgically enhanced look.

How do I know if I am suitable for breast shaping?

It is suitable for women who have asymmetry, loss of volume as a result of breast feeding or weight loss or under-developed breasts.  Macrolane enables the practitioner to sculpt the breast to provide a very natural breast enhancement to suit the individual patient's needs for example to restore volume in the upper pole of the breast.  It also provides soft fullness and natural shape which many women seek.

Can Macrolane be used for facial aesthetic treatments?

No, Macrolane is a specifically formulated NASHA gel that gives increased volume. As a result it should only be used for volume restoration and shaping of body surfaces.

Can Macrolane cause breast cancer?

There has been no causal link found between Macrolane, which is composed of hyaluronic acid, a natural substance already found in the body, and cancer. If cancer develops after the injection of the gel it would be more than likely be caused by factors other than the Macrolane VRF treatment.

Will Macrolane interfere with the reading of mammograms to detect breast cancer or other breast defects?

Patient safety is a priority for Q-Med and the company has carried out clinical trials into the use of Macrolane for women undergoing mammography following breast shaping. In January 2008, at a major aesthetics meeting, scientific evidence in the form of a poster presentation demonstrated that Macrolane did not interfere with mammograms or obstruct the detection of breast defects of any sort.

Can Macrolane be used in reconstructive surgery?

Macrolane does have potential for use in reconstruction in breast cancer patients post lumpectomy, as a stand alone treatment or in conjunction with other reconstructive procedures because of its moulding and shaping qualities. It could be helpful in breast cancer patients whom are small breasted and for whom a lumpectomy would have significant impact on breast shape post surgery.

Is Macrolane safe?

No product can be said to be 100 per cent safe. However, Q-Med values patient safety above all else and has carried out a number of clinical trials on Macrolane to make it as safe and effective as possible. Q-Med will continue to carry out clinical trials on Macrolane as part of the ongoing research into its uses.

"Plastic surgeons have been utilising the patient's own body fat to add volume at various body sites for many years, said Duncan Hesketh, Business Development Director for Q-Med (UK) Ltd, "but these major procedures involve long treatment times. MACROLANE is the first safe body shaping treatment using hyaluronic acid. Its natural qualities means treatment is fast, with instant results, and is non-invasive. Macrolane leaves no scarring and there is no need for a general anaesthetic or overnight hospital stay."

How long will it last?

Usually it will last around 9 - 12 months.

Do I require additional treatment?

A top up is usually required after approximately 9-months however top up prices will apply.

How much can I expect to pay for treatment?

The final cost will of course depending on the number of units used to achieve the desired effect.  This will be established at your initial consultation so that you will be fully aware of the cost implications before deciding whether to proceed with treatment.  The cost for 100 mls is £1,595, 150 mls £1,845 and 200 mls £2,145.  Top-up costs are from £825 - £1,395.

Treatment Diary for Becky Crozier

Pre Macrolane

Now 25 years old, I have been torn about the decision of having breast implants for as long as I can remember.

I have always been very uncomfortable with the size and shape of my breasts. I am happy with my figure as I am quite curvy. I always felt that my body was out of proportion. My Breasts didn’t match the rest of me I was only a size 32 A/B.

I felt very self conscious, on holiday I hated wearing Bikinis, never wore low cut tops or dresses and always wore padded bras with everything.

My problem was that I didn’t the like the idea of having surgery.

When I heard of the Macrolane treatment I was so excited and booked for a consultation with Doctor Ravi Jain at Court House Clinics. Dr Jain explained the procedure in thorough detail which made me feel very comfortable to go ahead with the procedure.

Day of procedure

On the day of the procedure I arrived at Court House Clinics Feeling a little nervous, but was made to feel very comfortable, I was also quite exited. Following consent for treatment, I was taken through and given local anesthetic which was slightly uncomfortable but not painful. The Procedure itself was not uncomfortable at all and only took about 30 minutes I would go through it again.

When the procedure was complete I couldn’t believe my eyes I had full breasts, I was advised that there would be some initial swelling and that this would go down in no more than two weeks.

For two to three days afterwards there was some slight discomfort but nothing unbearable.

I was required to wear a support bra for two weeks after the procedure. During this two week period they felt quite firm, I was aware of them as they were slightly sensitive.

Two weeks post treatment

I could hardly wait for the day to remove the sports bra. I was so pleased with the results. That day I went for a bra fitting and was very pleased to discover that I was now a full size 32C. I was thrilled and had a great shopping day as I felt comfortable in clothes I had never been able to wear before including low cut tops and dresses; I even took a holiday and felt great in my bikinis. This treatment has done wonders for my self confidence. The most positive point of this procedure is that they are so natural and they even feel like my own breast tissue, I feel no one would ever know that I have had any treatment.

Laser hair removal

Welcome to Court House Clinics. Under the guidance of Dr Patrick Bowler (well known from the television programme “10 years younger”) Court House has grown to offer a huge range of cosmetic and beauty treatments. Whilst these cover everything from high surgery treatments such as a face lift through to cosmetic injections for lines and wrinkles, in recent times laser hair removal has become one of our most popular treatments. Laser hair removal is a great way to deal with the growth of unwanted hair without having to go through the day-to-day ritual of shaving. With so many people coming to us for laser hair removal, we are now in position to offer it at a very competitive price. We also have regular promotions on it as well, for both new and existing hair removal customers.

Cosmetic Surgery

Cosmetic surgery is no longer the preserve of the rich and famous but is now accessible to everyone. This is largely due to safer techniques, reduced downtime with shorter scars, and greater awareness due to media exposure. It is also partly down to the larger number of people who have had non-surgical treatments before diving straight into cosmetic surgery.

The most common treatment that is carried out is liposuction (tummy tuck), rhinoplasty (nose reshaping), otoplasty (ear correction) and blepharoplasty (eyebag or eyelid surgery). These are often carried out in conjunction with treatments such as chin or cheek implants.

The most common surgery carried on women is breast enlargement (augmentation) and then mastopexy (breast uplift) closely followed by breast reduction surgery and face-lifts. However we are also seeing a marked increase for requests for labia and vaginal plastic surgeries.

Arguably the biggest change in recent years is the increase in demand for male cosmetic surgeries, with the most popular treatments being chest reduction, pectoral implant and testicular implants.

Non-Surgical Cosmetic Treatments

The demand for non-surgical treatments has grown at an even faster rate than cosmetic surgery. The treatments that are most in demand are laser hair removal and microdermabrasion treatments. These can mimic the effects of surgery or be used in combination with surgical procedures to enhance and prolong results.

For people with problem skin scientific breakthroughs now mean we are able to offer some of the best acne treatments available in combination with most effective anti aging treatments. For example we have invested in some of the latest acne laser treatment and when combined with chemical glycolic skin peels or perlane injections this can create similar effects as a cosmetic face-lift surgery and is very effect treatment for acne scarring.

Some of the non-surgical options provide a real alternative to surgery. A prime example of this is smart Lipo. This laser assisted liposculpture provides fast fat loss where the fat is actually dissolved by the body naturally. For small areas of localised fat this treatment is sometimes better than Liposuction as it is minimally invasive and involves little downtime.

In addition to these treatments we also offer thread vein removal, sculptra, perlane and restylane injections, skin tag removal, mole removal, cyst removal and laser tattoo removal.
