Wart removal
Warts are small, skin-coloured, rough lumps that appear on the surface of the skin which are benign (harmless) growths. They most frequently occur on the hands and feet, but can also be very common on the face and can prove to be embarrassing for both men and women.
Warts can look unattractive, but they are usually harmless and generally clear up by themselves without any treatment within one or two years. They are caused by infection with a virus called the human papilloma virus (HPV). The HPV virus causes a hard protein called keratin in the top layer of the skin (the epidermis) to grow too much, producing the rough, hard texture of a wart. They are very contagious as the skin cells in warts generally release thousands of viruses, so close skin-to-skin contact can pass on the infection. It is also possible to catch the infection indirectly from an object such as a towel. However, it can take weeks, or even months for a wart to appear after you have caught the infection.
There is no treatment that is guaranteed to remove warts; however you may have a wart treated by a procedure called Cryotherapy which involves freezing the skin with liquid nitrogen.

Frequently asked questions
What are the symptoms of a wart?
It is generally very easy to recognize the presence of warts, however depending on the area of the body that is infected, the symptoms can often vary. For instance, if left untreated, plantar warts can grow to a size of one inch or more. They can spread out and form clusters of warts that can become painful at times.
What is cryotherapy?
Cryotherapy is a procedure which includes freezing the skin with liquid nitrogen. Cryotherapy is used to destroy abnormal areas of the skin e.g. sun damage, solar keratoses, pre cancers, minor skin cancers and warts. There will be swelling and sometimes blisters afterwards.
Will I be left with a scar after treatment?
The skin usually heals uneventfully sometimes leaving a permanent scar at the treatment site. Sometimes there are temporary pigmentation changes (rarely permanent) and there is a small risk of infection.
Can warts return after treatment?
Even if warts are removed, the viruses that cause them remain in the body and the warts may reappear at a later time. However the goal of cryotherapy treatment is to destroy the wart and the virus.
Can you treat warts when you are pregnant?
Yes, you may treat the wart with cryotherapy, however you may prefer to wait until after the birth before considering such treatment.
How much can I expect to pay for this procedure?
Prices from £80.
