We’ve all made mistakes with our skin. Popping pimples, forgetting to remove makeup and not moisturising regularly are all common errors that can be forgiven once in a while, but what about the mistakes you don’t even know you’re making?
At Courthouse Clinics we see many patients with aesthetic issues that could have been avoided with improved skincare. Here are the five most common mistakes we see:
Not Knowing Your Skin Type
Knowing your skin type is incredibly important when choosing skincare as unsuitable products can cause damage. For instance, a moisturiser for oily complexions used on a dry skin type will not hydrate sufficiently, resulting in premature ageing and a dull, lacklustre complexion.
Not Using SPF
Protecting your skin from the sun is arguably the most essential step to any skincare regime, but the sun doesn’t only cause damage during the summer; UV rays harm the skin all year round. The only way to truly protect your skin is by using a high SPF every single day, but don’t rely on the SPF in your foundation – this will not be enough!
Exfoliating Too Much Or Not Enough
Exfoliation is another integral element to any skincare regime. Once a week the skin should be thoroughly yet gently scrubbed to remove dead skin cells and clear the dirt and product build-up from the pores. However, if you exfoliate too roughly and too often you can strip the skin of its natural oils as well as cause significant damage to the skin.
Using Products In The Incorrect Order
Remember: Cleanse, Tone, Exfoliate, Serum, Moisturiser, SPF. Your regime should begin by clearing away any dirt and debris from the skin and end with the application of thicker, moisturising products. The skin needs to be prepped in this way so that dirt is not trapped by the thicker products and the SPF protects efficiently.
Not Washing Bed Sheets Regularly
This is something that not many people know about. If you sleep on a pillowcase that is not washed properly every seven days then your skin could get clogged from dirt such as dust, dead skin and all the hair products that have transferred to the fabric.
