BOTOX® for Hyperhidrosis

Though not a serious medical condition, excessive sweating, otherwise known as hyperhidrosis, can cause social anxiety and embarrassment for affected individuals. Botox for sweating is a highly effective treatment that has been clinically-proven to provide relief for more than 93% of treated patients.*

Natural sweating is regulated by the hypothalamus, the part of the brain that controls body processes. It sends signals to the body’s sweat glands through various nerves scattered across the body. These nerves respond to different kinds of stress, including emotional, social, and physical, as well as in times of increased body temperature. For people who suffer with hyperhidrosis, the sweat glands overestimate these signals and as a result over-produce sweat.

Before we treat you, we’ll do a harmless and painless starch test to locate your sweat glands and to establish the severity of your problem. With both solutions treatment time is short and downtime minimal. With both botox and SweatX not only will you see a reduction in sweating, body odour should also be significantly decreased too.

Hyperhidrosis - Before and After

Treatment: BOTOX® for Hyperhidrosis
Area Treated: Underarms

Two years ago I started sweating under my arms – really badly. I’m 48, so thought it was probably menopause. But it wasn’t only the embarrassment that was a problem; I run a high-profile business so I felt like it really hampered my work. Then I saw an article in the paper Dr Patrick Bowler had been quoted in, about using Botox for sweating.
I’m a skeptic normally, but honestly – it is brilliant.
I started having it last year. Once I’d chatted with the doctor and checked it didn’t go into your bloodstream- all the horror stories you hear like that- I decided to go on ahead with it.
He did a test with talc and iodine to see where to put the injections. It wasn’t painful; it was just a few pinpricks. Within 20 minutes of going in, I was out again. It took about to week to work and then lasted five months.
It’s the best thing I ever did. Bad sweating is very embarrassing, especially if you have to look good for your job. My advice? Just don’t worry. If you have a problem, find the answer. If you sweat profusely – look no further.

Results may vary and are different for each individual.

What causes underarm sweating?
Natural sweating is regulated by the hypothalamus (a part of the brain that controls automatic body processes). It sends signals to the body’s sweat glands through various nerves scattered across the body. These nerves respond to different kinds of stress – emotional, social and physical, as well as in times of increased body temperature.

For individuals suffering with hyperhidrosis, the sweat glands overestimate these signals and as a result, produce a much larger than necessary amount of sweat.

Who are good candidates for muscle relaxing injections?
Muscle relaxing injections such as Botox are ideal for anyone who suffers with excessive sweating. You may want to consider this treatment if:

– You are embarrassed by excessive underarm sweating
– You have tried other sweating treatments without success
– You work in close contact with others (eg hairstylists, nurses, dentists, hygienists, airline flight attendants, etc)
– You have previously ruined clothes due to excessive sweating

Botox is a safe and effective way to treat excessive sweating. As a general rule, the best candidates will also possess good overall health and realistic expectations.

How is it used?
Prior to treatment, we will perform a harmless and painless starch test to locate your sweat glands. Using a very small needle, your cosmetic doctor will inject small amounts of Botox into the skin of your underarms. Each underarm will require approximately 12 to 15 injections.

There is no “downtime” needed following treatment, and you should be able to resume most normal routines right away. Strenuous exercise should be avoided for several hours after treatment.

When will treatment take effect?
According to Allergan (makers of Botox), in clinical trials 89% of patients who had Botox treatment were satisfied after a single week. Your underarm sweating will begin to decrease within 48 hours and full results of treatment should be seen within 1 week. In addition to decreased sweating, you can also anticipate decreased body odour.*
How long do results last?
Results vary from patient to patient. According to Allergan (makers of Botox), in clinical trials 93% of patients were still satisfied after 16 weeks of treatment. Most patients only require two treatments a year to maintain results.*
What are the risks and complications?
Complications associated with this sweating treatment are rare. It is possible to that you will experience some mild bruising at the treatment sites, but this will fade within a few days. Additionally, it is possible that small persistent areas of sweating will require more than a single treatment to achieve desired results. There is no risk of muscle weakness, numbness or permanent changes in the underarm skin.
