Eyelid & Eyebag Surgery

The eyes are one of the most expressive features of the face. But as we age, facial tissues surrounding the eyes may begin to droop and sag, causing the eyes to appear tired, sad or even angry. Significant sagging around the eyes can also result in visual disturbances.

Eyelid surgery – blepharoplasty – is a procedure designed to give you a fresher, well-rested appearance by correcting excess baggy skin around the eyes. The best candidates for blepharoplasty will be motivated to improve their appearance and possess one or more of the following conditions:

  • Sagging, loose skin on the upper eyelids which may obscure vision
  • Excess fatty deposits appearing on the upper or lower eyelids
  • Persistent puffy bags beneath the eyes
  • Excess skin or wrinkles beneath the lower eyelids

The procedure itself is painless yet you will feel some discomfort to begin with as the skin will feel tight, but this can be controlled with medication supplied on the day of surgery.

Frequently Asked Questions

Click on the questions to reveal the answers.

Will the wrinkles return?
The results of your eyelid surgery will be long-lasting, but not permanent. Eyelid surgery will not halt the natural ageing process or the effects of gravity. Over the course of several years, you may start to notice similar signs of ageing around the eyes. To increase the probability long-lasting results, it is recommended that you refrain from tobacco use and prolonged sun exposure.
Could I have a facelift at the same time?
Eyelid surgery is frequently performed in conjunction with other facial rejuvenation procedures such as a facelift. The two procedures can be performed during the same surgery to enhance the final results. Eyelid surgery can also be performed with other surgical procedures such as brow lift, or non-surgical treatments such as laser skin resurfacing. These options will be discussed in depth during your consultation.
Will I need to take time off work?
You will need to take time off from work to recover from surgery. Recovery times vary among patients, but you should be able to resume a normal routine within 10 days. More strenuous activities may be restricted for several weeks. All sutures will be removed within 4-6 days, but noticeable swelling and bruising may persist for 1-2 weeks.
How will I feel following surgery?
Immediately following surgery it is common to experience some soreness or tightness around the eyes for the first few days. Discomfort can be managed through a combination of prescription pain medication and cold compresses. We will provide you with specific aftercare instructions to minimise the presence of swelling and bruising.
Will I have any scarring after eye lid correction?
The incisions made during blepharoplasty will be concealed within the contours of your eyelids. Visible scarring will be minimal and incision lines will gradually fade over the course of several months. During upper eyelid surgery, incisions will be made in the natural crease of the upper lid. While incisions made during lower eyelid surgery will fall just beneath the lash line.
