Exfoliating

caring for your skin

No matter what skin type you have – whether it be dry, normal, oily, sensitive or combination – exfoliation should be an essential part of your healthy skincare routine. Experts recommend that you exfoliate on a weekly basis, but you might be surprised to learn that there are more advantages to it than just the feeling of deeply cleansed skin.

Our skin is constantly growing and renewing. In the deeper layers of the skin new cells are created every 28 to 45 days ¬within the live tissue, otherwise known as the Dermis. These new cells travel up to the surface of the skin, slowly dying in the process, and form a protective layer of dead cells on the outer layer of the skin. This outer layer is called the Epidermis.

So it is completely natural to have dead skin cells on the surface of our skin, but they are not supposed to be there for very long. It is only once dead skin cells have been removed from the surface that a message is sent to the Dermis requesting fresh replacement cells to be made.

If we do nothing to help the process along the dead skin cells start to clump together. The skin no longer looks fresh and clean and can begin to look dull, sometimes even a little grey, as the pores begin to clog. This can result in blackheads, acne and the pores themselves appearing larger. Unfortunately the soaps and cleansers we use, although able to remove dirt and oil from the skin, cannot remove all of the cells on their own. This is why exfoliation is so vitally important in skincare.

Exfoliation is great for speeding up the skin renewal process, allowing for smoother, healthier skin cells to flourish. Not only will this help with pigmentation and discoloration issues, but it will help to reduce fine lines and wrinkles as well. The general reproduction of new cells naturally slows as we age, so stimulating this process will revitalise the skin and make it appear more youthful.

Exfoliation also helps supplements to soak deeper into the skin. If you’ve ever had fake tan you will know that it is usually recommended to exfoliate before applying the lotion or spray. This is so the skin can absorb the colour easier for a richer, more even finish. The same effect applies to everyday lotions and creams, as high levels of dead skin on the surface hinders the absorption of moisture and topical nutrients.

There are two types of exfoliants that you can choose from: mechanical and chemical. The mechanical method uses a scrub or brush to physically remove the layer of skin, whereas the chemical peel lifts off the skin via a safe, chemical reaction. Both are highly effective when used properly and on a regular basis.

Store-bought mechanical exfoliants have a rough texture and can be made from salt, sugar nuts and shells. Although these are good for weekly use, for a more intensive exfoliation that lasts longer and has more noticeable results, you could opt for treatment administered by a professional.

The two main exfoliating treatments we offer at Courthouse Clinics are chemical peels and microdermabrasion. The chemical peel obviously uses a chemical exfoliation method and is great for freshening up dull, dry or damaged complexions. It can also be used to treat blemishes, sun damage and other signs of ageing.
