Facial fillers (sometimes known as dermal fillers
) are a hugely popular anti-ageing treatment – yet a lot of people still aren’t sure exactly what they are, or how they work. In short, facial fillers are an excellent way to add volume, improve facial contours, enhance definition and smooth lines and wrinkles
. Lip fillers
are also used to achieve a fuller, plumper pout.
Fillers sometimes have different brand names, such as Juvéderm or Restylane. While it’s very important to use a reputable product, the skill of your practitioner is key. At Courthouse Clinics, only qualified, experienced Doctors or Advanced Nurse Prescribers administer facial fillers, in order to achieve a bespoke, safe, natural looking result.
How do facial fillers work?
Facial fillers are not muscle relaxants
, so although they are an injectable treatment, they are different from Botox
. The magic ingredient is hyaluronic acid, a substance that occurs naturally in our bodies but decreases as we age. Hyaluronic acid works by “filling in”
a wrinkle, combining with the water in your skin to add moisture where it’s needed to restore lost fullness, improve skin quality, and smooth lines
. Done properly, facial fillers deliver subtle results that leave you looking rested and refreshed – not fake and frozen.
What happens during treatment?
Before treatment, every patient has a consultation with their practitioner to check their suitability and discuss their aesthetic goals, including what they do (and don’t!) want. This consultation is also the perfect opportunity to ask any questions you may have about the procedure, and to discuss proportions and balance. It’s best to think holistically about your whole face, rather than focus on just one specific area. For example, if you’re having lip enhancements, consider the size of your nose and chin when choosing how much volume you want to put in your pout.
After your consultation and before your treatment takes place, your Doctor or Advanced Nurse Prescriber will prep and cleanse your skin. Next, tiny amounts of filler will be injected into your face and/or lips. It’s a fast procedure – usually treatments only take around 30 minutes
from start to finish.
Most patients report little or no pain
during treatment, but if you’re worried, all of our filler treatments can be combined with lidocaine (a local anaesthetic) to minimise discomfort. You might experience some minor redness and swelling after the injections, but this is a normal reaction and will soon subside. You should certainly be able to carry on with your day-to-day activities.
When will I see the results?
The results are instant (and get progressively better)
but aren’t permanent, as the filler is absorbed naturally by the body over time. Expect the effects to last anything from three to twelve months, depending on the product used and the area treated. To make sure you’re happy with your results, we recommend a follow-up appointment after two weeks.
