Your Week In Beauty Links
Sugar addictions and makeup tutorials, body confidence and live-tweeting from the operating room, this week’s roundup of Internet beauty links shows some real insight into health and beauty trends currently evolving around the globe…
Kicking the white stuff: There’s no two ways about it, as a nation we’re addicted to sugar. It’s not just sweets and chocs; sugar is in almost all pre-packaged food and it’s killing us. From soups to salad dressings, sandwiches to smoothies, the hidden sugar in our everyday diets means terrible things for our future health. Cosmo recently profiled Madeleine Shaw, the London-based nutritionist responsible for detoxing Millie Mackintosh and Caggie Dunlop of their addiction. Quitting sugar can see your skin and energy levels improve, and there’s nothing more beautiful than looking bright-eyed and feeling bushy-tailed!
Mouldy Fruit makeup: One of our beauty blogger faves, Zara at Mouldy Fruit, has *finally* done her first makeup tutorial on her blog. We adore Zara, and have followed her for a while now. She writes honest and straight-talking posts that often make us a bit green with envy at her fabulous life- but she’s too pretty for anything other than total infatuation. She freely admitted how daunting going on video makeup-less felt, but Zara, let us just say- the end result is brilliant, and you MUST film more vids for us! Go and check her out to give her some encouragement…
Big is beautiful (now it’s time to actually believe it): Week after week there are articles online about how women are embracing their curves and building their confidence, and yet when we have after-work drinks with the girls it seems to be having little effect on how women really feel about themselves. There She Is is a new 20-minute documentary available to watch for free here, a project designed to celebrate plus size women and reduce that crippling pressure to be thinner.
Unless, of course, your weight is hurting your health: Married couple Jason and Rachel Cornelliers lost a whopping 310lbs between them after concerns for their wellbeing, and managed the feat is less than a year, too. Documented on ABC’s “Extreme Weight Loss”, the pair had become so large that they couldn’t play with their 6-year old twins: they recognized that they had a problem, and so went to extreme lengths to fix it. Results came after twelve months of grueling hard work through a strict diet and extreme exercise, and those results speak for themselves. Amazing.
Couture Makeup and the next Big Trend: Vogue have given the rest of us mere mortals an insight into what to expect from winter’s beauty trends. According to the illustrious fashion bible, Couture Fashion Week has set the bar at a classically pretty, pared-back look, focused on shimmering lips and big bare lids with butterfly lashes. That might seem like good news, but, as every woman knows, bare-faced chic can be more work than full war paint. Consider upping your skincare routine now to get the glow you’ll need to pull off the look come autumn.
Live-tweeting from the operating room: Dr Jennifer L. Walden invited a curious crowd into her operating room to witness a facelift, eyelift and fat grafting procedure via social media. The Austin-based surgeon hashtagged #liveOR and via Vine, Twitter and Instagram kept followers in the loop with imagery, videos and Tweets live from the operating room. You can check out more from Dr Walden on @drjenwalden for fascinating insight into what really happens during surgical procedures.
